Finding what people who work away from a desk need

A technology company wanted opportunities for people who work away from a desk. We studied two mobile audiences through their working days, then turned the evidence into opportunity platforms with the company’s teams.

The question

Most technology for work is designed around a desk. The company wanted to understand people who work away from one, and to find opportunities there for its innovation pipeline.

Two groups mattered most: frontline staff who are on the move all day, and people who work as they travel.

Our approach

We started with people’s own records of their working days, so the research caught moments they wouldn’t think to mention, then followed up in interviews.

Many frontline workplaces are closed to visitors, for safety and privacy, so we rebuilt their working set-ups for in-person interviews where people could show us what they do. The company’s own team took part.

A workshop with the company’s teams then treated these workers as leading-edge users, turning the evidence into opportunity platforms and early ideas meant to serve mobile workers well beyond the two groups.

What the team came away with

Opportunity platforms built on the needs of people who work away from a desk, a workshop toolkit for taking them further, and a set of early ideas for the innovation pipeline.

Who we heard from

Frontline staff who work on the move, and people who work as they travel, in records of their own working days and in interviews
