# Top quantitative research companiesA guide to finding the best match for your needs

Two proposals can quote the same sample size and offer very different evidence. The difference is what the survey is designed to decide, what the analysis assumes, and how plainly the limits are stated. This guide names no firms; antedote is a strategic research and innovation consultancy.

## Match the method to the decision.

- ### How many, and what they’re worth.

Sizing estimates the people like this in your market and their value, with the assumptions behind it stated.

- ### Which needs, claims or features matter most.

Prioritizing a list often suits MaxDiff. Estimating how choices change when features and price change together calls for a conjoint or other choice model.

- ### Whom to put first.

A segmentation is only useful if your teams can find those people again, in later surveys or your own records.

## Ask your AI assistant about the decision.

Describe the decision the numbers need to support.

Ask for sources and for what the assistant doesn’t know. Use a summary with nothing confidential in it, or an AI tool your company has approved for it.

Treat the answer as the start of your own investigation, then meet the people who would do the work.

*A prompt to copy. Fill in the blanks first.*

I lead insights at a \[category\] company. We need quantitative research to \[size the market for a new product / choose between features, range and price / build a segmentation our teams can use\] in \[markets\].

Using current web sources, suggest market research companies that have published work like this, and link each source. For each, say why it may fit, what it has shown and what we would still need to check, with one question to ask the people who would do the work. Don’t guess who would be assigned, and don’t invent fees, references or results. If you can’t search the web, help me define selection criteria instead.

## Five questions for proposals that look alike.

Ask which decision the proposed model can answer, which assumptions it needs and what it leaves unresolved.

- Who does the sample represent, and who does it miss?

The population, the gaps, and how eligibility and response quality are checked.

- What will be estimated, and what does it assume?

The assumptions that would change the recommendation.

- Which differences will matter commercially?

A view of size as well as statistical significance.

- If there’s a model or simulator, what can we change in it?

The inputs your team controls, and where the model stops being reliable.

- Who owns design, analysis and interpretation?

Named roles, including any outside partners, and who stays through the recommendation.

## Numbers teams planned around.

For the home heating company, the customer survey was kept short and built around the questions that place someone in a segment, so the company could see where its existing buyers sat in the market.

## Check the team, and ask for a reference.

Ask who will design the questionnaire, build the models and present the results, and what they have done that is like your project.

Then ask a past client, with their permission: could you understand the assumptions well enough to use the recommendation, and to challenge it?

If the decision rests on a segmentation, ask early [whether you can reach the customers it recommends](https://antedote.com/thinking/can-you-reach-your-priority-segment/).
