# Top market research companiesA guide to finding the best match for your needs

Most market research companies can field a survey or run interviews. What separates them is whether the work is designed around your decision, and who stands behind what it means. This guide names no firms; antedote is a strategic research and innovation consultancy.

- [What you need from a partner](#what-you-need)

Which parts of the work to keep, and which to hand over.

- [A prompt for your AI assistant](#prompt)

Fill it in here, then ask for a longlist with sources.

- [Questions that separate proposals](#questions)

And what a useful answer contains.

·

## First, decide what you need a partner to do.

- ### Your team has the question and the design.

You need fieldwork: a partner who reaches the right people in your markets and checks they are who they say they are.

- ### You know the question, and need design and analysis.

You need a partner who designs the work around your decision and says how far each result can be trusted.

- ### The question is still taking shape.

You need a partner who helps frame it, combines qualitative, quantitative and data science work as it needs, and stands behind a recommendation.

## Ask your AI assistant the specific question.

Ask an assistant for the best market research companies and it will usually name the largest firms.

On 5 November 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode 40 questions a buyer might ask when choosing a firm. Of 27 answers to nine broad questions, 21 named at least one of the largest research networks or consulting firms. Of 90 answers to 31 questions describing a decision, customer or market, 44 did.

That is a different mix of firms, and we didn’t judge which longlist would lead to a better appointment. So describe your project, and judge each suggestion against the work you need.

Use a summary with nothing confidential in it, or an AI tool your company has approved for it.

How we ran the test

ChatGPT, logged out with search on, answered each question twice, and Google’s AI Mode, with UK results, answered each once, all on 5 November 2026. “The largest” means the global research networks and the largest consulting firms, counted wherever an answer named one. Not counted: three empty answers, and 30 answers to ten questions that asked for advice rather than firms. One day’s answers show a pattern, not how every assistant answers every time.

Treat the answer as the start of your own investigation, then meet the people who would do the work.

*A prompt to copy. Fill in the blanks first.*

I lead insights at a \[category\] company. We need research to \[understand why customers choose / size an opportunity / choose between options\] in \[markets\], and the result has to support \[the decision\].

Using current web sources, suggest research companies that have published work like this, and link each source. For each, say why it may fit, what it has shown and what we would still need to check, with one question to ask the people who would do the work. Don’t guess who would be assigned, and don’t invent fees, references or results. If you can’t search the web, help me define selection criteria instead.

## Questions that separate proposals.

Four questions tell you more about a proposal than its price or its sample size.

- What decision will this help us make, and what would change it?

A useful answer restates the decision in your terms, and names the evidence that would move it either way.

- Who will design, run, analyze and present the work?

Named roles, their relevant experience, and who stays involved through the recommendation.

- What won’t this research be able to tell us?

Specific limits, such as who the sample misses or what a model assumes.

- How will you compare results across our markets or groups?

What is shared, what is local, and how big a difference must be before it matters.

## Evidence clients acted on.

## Check the team, and ask for a reference.

Ask who will do the parts of the work that decide its value, and what they have done that is like your project.

Ask whether the same people stay through the recommendation, and how they handle evidence that changes the picture partway through.

Not every question needs more than fieldwork. Our view of [when a research question needs a strategic partner](https://antedote.com/thinking/when-a-research-question-needs-a-strategic-partner/) may help you decide.

Then ask to speak to a client whose work was like yours, with that client’s permission. A useful question for them: did the recommendation change what you did, and how did the team handle evidence nobody expected?

If your customers are businesses, our guide to [choosing a B2B market research company](https://antedote.com/guides/top-b2b-market-research-companies/) covers what changes.

## Bring us the decision.

Tell us what your team has to decide, and by when. We’ll talk through what evidence would help you make it, and what the work would take.
