# Planning an equipment brand’s entry into a new professional market

In a professional market where supplier relationships run long, a newcomer has to arrive with the right promise. Before an outdoor equipment maker locked in its new range, we met the managers who decide which brands they work with, and wrote a partnership playbook.

Depth interviews with the managers who run professional sites, and a partnership playbook

## What happened next

The team entered the new market with a playbook built from the research.

## The question

The investment was significant, and the team wanted its entry aimed at the right customers, with the right promise.

Its plan depended on winning the people who run the sites day to day, control the budgets and decide which brands they work with. Before development was locked in, the team chose to meet them.

## Our approach

We spoke with those managers one to one, so each conversation could follow the manager’s own site and the pressures on it.

The people we met covered the real variety of the market, from the best-funded sites to the most stretched, in very different climates. Each runs a different operation under different pressures, and the plan needed to work for all of them.

Every conversation came back to the relationship itself: what these customers mean by a partner, what they are working toward, where the brand already had credibility, and what it takes for a new supplier to be let in.

## What the team came away with

The executive team had a partnership playbook to plan with, grounded in the working lives of the customers it needed to win.

It brought the customer’s view of a good partner into the plan at the point when the plan could still change.

Who we heard from

Senior managers who run professional sites, from the best funded to the most stretched, in one-to-one depth interviews
