# Four accessories in development, each with its own question

The right evidence depends on where a product is in development. A consumer technology company had accessories at very different stages, so we ran one program that matched a method to each one’s question.

**Client**
Consumer technology company

**Industry**
Consumer technology

**Markets**
Two markets

**Kind of work**
Concept and product testing

**Our role**
Proposition, value and prototype research on accessories in development

## What happened next

Three of the four accessories later launched, and the company launched a product drawn from the fourth.

## The question

Each accessory was at a different point in development, and each raised a different question for the product and marketing teams.

For the next generation of an existing product, the question was which value proposition should lead, and for whom. For a new device, it was who would value it and how to explain its benefit. For two prototypes, it was whether people could set them up and trust them first time.

## Our approach

We ran the work as one program, with a method matched to each product’s question.

Where the question was who would value a product and what it should say, we went quantitative. We compared value propositions across audiences, existing owners among them, put the new model head-to-head with the current one, and evaluated the new device’s concept.

Where the question was about first use, people got the prototypes in their hands. For one, we watched each step of a first-time setup. For the other, the client’s product and marketing colleagues observed the interviews themselves.

## What the team came away with

Each stage reported to the product and marketing teams as the products moved through development.

For every accessory, the teams had evidence on who it was for, what it needed to say and what its first use had to get right.

Who we heard from

Several audiences in the quantitative stages, and people using the prototypes in person
